The Zanzibar Outreach Programme is run in conjunction with our long term partner the Impact Foundation. Dr Nick visited Zanzibar as recently as November 2023 and he was very impressed by the quality and variety of the work ZOP are doing both on the main island of Unguja and the much less populated island of Pemba. Led by Dr Naufal (an ENT Surgeon) they have a dedicated team of volunteers who, amongst other things, run a school academy for profoundly deaf children, a community water supply project and regular mobile health clinics which provide vital medical services free of charge in the outlying towns and villages. We have subsequently made a match funded contribution to assist their work.

The Eleanor Foundation was set up by Allister Carey MBE in 2012 following the tragic death of his daughter Eleanor whilst cycling in London. She had been studying International Development and had a particular interest in water, sanitation and hygiene issues which consequently have become the main focus of the Foundation’s work in the Biharamulo and Chato Districts of rural NW Tanzania. In close collaboration with government the Eleanor Foundation has provided clean water to numerous village communities and upgraded sanitation facilities at numerous schools. They have also built a health centre and maternity unit to serve the people living in Mutundu. In January 2022 Dr Nick and Claudine travelled out to Tanzania with the Eleanor Team and saw for themselves the excellent work that they do. As a result funding has since been provided for a brand new shallow well in Nyampende Village and for vital medical equipment to be installed in the health centre at Mwekako village in Chato District, NW Tanzania. We hope to continue working in partnership with the Foundation in the years ahead.
